I've been known to say that Islam could have been another sect of Christianity if early Christians had played it a little smarter.

True, but of course their rationale was that politics corrupted religion. Our rationale is exactly the opposite.

Ironically there are many who would argue that Islam started as reform movement (despite its military history).

I think part of my beef with Islam (in addition to its fondness for violence) is because it seems to be relatively reform-proof.

If Irshad Manji's theology, or Amina Wadud's won out, I would have no problem with Islam, but so much of it seems to be deeply entrenched.

Even the stuff about women, I bet there are Hadiths that claim Muhammad wanted it that way. Even if the Q'ran does not. Not that the Q'ran is so egalitarian, maybe it doesn't prescribe hijabs but it does prescribe the appropriate way to beat your wife.

*sigh

But I did not say ONE thing, surely you read my post where I said it is never one thing. The major question is "how is absolutist belief in a celestial being helping?" HELPING is the word.

In neuropsychology it is much the same (hooray for small moments of unification across the academic spheres!). The world-views and assessments of Fundies is quite alarming, when dealing with the mundane to the macroscopic. The amount of Muslim men for example who demand their wives wear niqabs (you know about these, with the ninja-slits) is alarming - not solely for what they demand but their justification. (Most know that this whole Tomfoolery around the issues of women in Islam is a misunderstanding of what occurred during Muhammad's time and his treatment of women, who from fairly reliable sources like Karen Armstrong and Reza Aslan, he treated quite well and on equal terms. Though that says nothing about what happens now!)

I'm critical and outspoken as most of us are here, for the simple reason that we need evidence, reason and a profound sense of identification with HUMANS. We need to promote respect. This is a difficult position, considering I've blatantly said I'm intolerant about a number of things. Nonetheless, your point is well-spotted and neatly targetted. (apologies for the slight waffle-talk after my carefully constructed piece above ;)
