In all honesty, I personally don’t care if it says or does not say “In God we Trust” on US currency. It doesn’t affect me. I am more concerned with having humanity move onto a post-theistic world. However, the current results of the poll are rather pathetic.
It is obvious that having “In God we Trust” on currency is a violation of the separation of church and state. It blatantly advertises the government’s support of some sort of supernatural entity. I don’t care though. At the moment there are bigger fish to fry. These fish affect us in greater ways than these four words on paper. Fish such as the poor state of the school systems in the US, fundamentalism, and faith-based initiatives should occupy our minds more.

Dammit Roy, you just made me sad.
No, definitely not. I’m a card-carrying atheist and I think this is a miniscule issue that would cost far more to correct than would be worth it for just a “feel good” moment for us that would last all of 5 minutes.
If we as secularists want to focus on the church encroaching on the state, then we should focus on important issues like evangelical politicians, rampant church-sponsored lobbying groups, anti-intelligence religious campaigns (ID being taught in Kansas, anyone?), or heck, even the “Under God” in the pledge of allegiance.
But that’s just my 2 cents.
I totally agree Travis! There are many more important issues. Thanks for visiting Edger.
Travis, I would agree with you. In Canada we have the line “God keep our land” in our national anthem. Of course I think it’s wrong that it’s in there, but I don’t feel we should be putting our resources into such endeavours.
keep
keep in God we trust on our currency. our country was founded on this idea.
The reference to “God” should NOT be removed – this reference is what America was built on – what Americans believe in – it seems with all the different cultures coming into America people want to change what has been in our country for so long. “In God We Trust” should not be removed from anything – including our courtroom and schools. If people don’t want to believe, that is their choice – no one is forcing them. Leave the belief and tradtiion where it needs to be.
Actually, that is an incorrect notion.
The framers of the constitution, were almost all deists or atheists. They did NOT want god to have anything to do with government. Our country was founded on the idea of “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness” NOT “In God we Trust.”
If you take some time to read some history books, this will all be eminently clear.
In God we Trust was added to paper money in 1957.
The concept of referring to God on money was not thought up of until around the Civil War and was pushed for during the 1860s.
No where in the Constitution does it say anything about God. Our nation was founded upon a constitution that protects our rights and separates church from state. The First Amendment, our most important amendment says that. The US was founded on the idea of “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” No God needed.
Please, get your facts straight. While I agree it is peoples’ choice to not believe, religion is still being forced upon people when government money has referenced to religion on it. When government sanctioned items have references to god, the government sanctions god. This is unacceptable and against the First Amendment.
Not all Americans believe “In God we Trust”. The framers of the constitution did not believe that. Thomas Jefferson, was a deist…he did not believe in a god that affected the world.
So you are wrong, I”m sorry.
That is a total lie! our founding fathers was atheist? lol what country are you talking about because its not the U.S.
If you look at thier writings and what and how they lived their everyday lives you would clearly see they was very Christian.
Your lies about what the “seperation of church and state” meant is absolutely funny to anybody who has studied the issue.
They did not want God out of our country or our government they wanted our government out of our religeon.
Not the other way around as alot of ppl like you claim and its very easy to see the truth by looking at their lives and many was ministers, and by looking at what your own eyes could show you.
If they didnt want god in our government then why was God stated in almost every piece of writing and legislation? and further through the years why was it on every bit of currency on every court house and simply everywhere? Where do you think our laws come from?
Oh and in your next statement is flat out lie, you say that know where in the constitution does it say anything about god? read it again.
And you should really start learning about the lives of people like Jefferson etc and in their everyday lives before you say they was a deist and that others is wrong.
You are wrong my friend and your saying that because its on the money its is being “forced” apon you? please when was the last time someone ran up to you and said you have that dollar pray damnit ! never!.
The real facts is your trying to push your ideas and believes on us, not the other way around,
In your view if a few like you dont like something millions of people and governments should change to cuttle your little whiny ass imotional needs.
Get over youreself! If you dont like the way this country is then you have a very easy option, go somewhere that is more to your liking period!
If it wasnt for this countries believe in god then their wouldnt be all these other religions and rights and liberties etc etc etc
Oh and I dont suppose your going to make your next arguement for stopping abortions (mass baby mutilations) because it clearly states that “everybody” has a right to life, liberty and pursuite of happiness are you?. I didnt think so huh?
See because to you that probably dont fit your lifestyle so the constitution doesnt aplly to anybody who goes against what you believe, the only time you use the constitution is to try and twist it to make everybody like you.
To people like you the constitution and eveything else is something you want to try and twist and tear down pieces and add other pieces to fit only what you want to fit your lifestyle.
How about this? Take away our laws and let everybody out of jail since they was formed from reflecting on the the ten commandments.
Tell you what pick a country you would want us to model ourselves after please.
“not all americans believe in god” True but the mass majority does and has throughout history so stop trying to change the mass for the few.
“the framers of the constitution did not believe thet” that is a total lie and you know it.
Thomas Jefferson was a deist” wrong!
“he did not believe in a god that effected the world” that part is true! he beived in a god that put it in our hands to effect the world.
Stop trying to twist things your way.
So you are wrong, i’m sorry.
oh and you put in there “no god needed”, if you read any of their writings you would know how dead wrong you was, according to them god was needed in everything we did.
So please get YOUR facts right.
Hrm…it’s hard to tell if you are an internet troll…especially since you make such blatant mistakes and have bad spelling.
First off, you already are someone not worthy to argue with. You make a claim that there is the word “god” in the Constitution. I just found the full text of the Constitution here: http://www.usconstitution.net/const.html
YOU KNOW WHAT? I searched through it…NO “GOD” ANYWHERE!
ANYWAY, I did not say they were all atheists. Although I do agree, I was a bit loose with my wording. I should have said the framers of the constitution were not your normal Christian. Most of them were deists and the case could be made Jefferson was an atheist.
You are still wrong, Jefferson, the main author of the constitution did not want government in religion or religion in government. Heck, he was NOT a Christian. Do you know what Jefferson did once? He went through a copy of the bible and cut out all the supernatural elements and parts he thought were wrong (parts that were added later by the four evangelists). It is called the Jefferson Bible. Here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jefferson_Bible
Anyway, Jefferson was not a Christian. He didn’t believe in the resurrection of Christ. You are definitely NOT a Christian if you do not believe Jesus rose from the dead.
This shows how ignorant you are…millions of Germans supported Hitler while a much smaller number of German citizens did not want to kill the Jews. By your reasoning. Hitler was right.
How am I twisting the Constitution? The first amendment says “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion…”
How is having “In God we Trust” not supporting religion? Could you explain that to me?
This also shows how little you know. The constitution came out of the Enlightenment, NOT the 10 commandments. Heck, have you read the bible? God allows rape and murder all throughout.
Anyway…please, learn a bit before ranting and making a fool of yourself.
Again, no where in the constitution does it mention God…no where.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,
or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom
of speech, or of the press; of the right of the people peaceably
to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Believing is God is NOT the establishment of A religion for many religions believe in A GOD. Everyone also seems to always forget the second part, or prohibit the FREE EXERCISE thereof. The first amendment is often misrepresented to mean separation of church and state which is not in there either, especially when taken in its TOTAL context, or prohibit. It seems top me we keep trying to prohibit and it never gets any play.
I do trust in God, most Americans do, I concede not all, but it is certainly not prohibited by the Constitution to say so either so let’s stop pretending it does.
While I can think of many important issues, when normal people who aren’t constitutional experts look at American money, which they deal with every day, its much easier for them to be convinced by politicians, that they live in a Christian nation. The people who put it on the money knew this.
Have you no shame M?
Did I not just demonstrate there is no “God” in the Constitution?
Come on, be intellectually honest and come out and say you were wrong.
“Thomas Jefferson was a deist” wrong!
“he did not believe in a god that effected the world” that part is true! he beived in a god that put it in our hands to effect the world.”
Behold! The definition of a deist.
Hi. First, I am not saying people should be prohibited from believing in god. I agree with you. No one has a right to stop another from believing in god.
A church is an establish religion. The first amendment says “…make no law respecting an establishment of religion,…” So it does mean separation of church and state.
No one is trying to prohibit religions. We are however, trying to prohibit religion influencing and controlling politics.
Hi.
I would appreciate it if you acknowledged that there is no “God” mentioned in the Constitution. The only time religion is mentioned is in a negative one in Article VI, Section III, which prohibits any religious test for office.
So please, at least be brave enough to come out and acknowledge you are wrong. Scared?
Also, having the government support a statement (”In God We Trust”) on currency is in fact supporting religion. It supports all religions. Hence, it should be a no no.
I cant believe that people would even think about removing this just because it would upset some people that it is there. Since when did we go from being such a proud nation to a nation that cares so much about not offending the people who are so overly sensitive. Its there, its always been there and it should stay there. It doesnt say a certain God, just God, and that can include everyones God that has one. I believe in change, but I do not believe in undoing what does not need to be undone. If someone gets so offended by a couple words on money then they have too much time on their hands and they are way too sensitive and insecure!
So let me just be the first to say…wow…Why argue over something…so..unimportant?? Spelling isn’t an issue on a website to begin with, Oh and by the way…EVERYONE MAKES MISTAKES….so be grown up about it and stop arguing and being just plain dumb. You’re all adults and it’s pathetic that you’d sit here and argue over the internet. Everyone has different beliefs and are entitled to their own opinions no matter what yours is. You can’t change people. So GET OVER IT!
Religion is evil and must be wiped out, no matter how many have to die to achieve that end.
First off, it’s not because it upsets people that the words should be removed, it is because it is unconstitutional that the words should be removed.
On another note…you seem to be annoyed by people complaining about the unconstitutionality of God on the money…to use your own words with some modification:
If someone gets so offended by a complaint about something then they have too much time on their hands and they are way too sensitive and insecure!
It is obvious that some people think it is sophisticated and indicative of having attained a higher level of intelligence than the average person to proudly proclaim the title of : “athiest”. However, contraire, you poor deluded dupe. You are epitomizing the very essence of stupidity. Your guru, Madalyn Murry O’Hare really led you down the thorny path to perdition. It would seem that you could benefit somewhat from where her “unbeliefs” led her. However, because you are fortunate to live in this country, where we still have the freedoms our founding fathers afforded us – who were overwhelmingly of the Christian persuasion, it is your right to practice and profess your preferences (at least until freedom of speech is outlawed). And if this should happen, it will be heavily attributable to the idiotic efforts of radical “pseuo-intellectuals” who think themselves wise, but in truth are only fools.
As for removing the words, “In God We Trust”, from our currency or anywhere else it has been placed as our national credo, my stand is: UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD IT BE REMOVED. I also feel strongly that the words of the Ten Commandments are in no way an afforntry to any religion – perhaps they may be to criminals and those who would do evil to others. If the “Anti-Christians” would or could look at the words objectively, it is clear they are words that, if followed, help insure everyone’s right to the pursuit of life with a greater opportunity for safety and freedom from fear.
SO – keep the words: “In God We Trust”, and keep faith in America. We have been the envy of the world for a pretty long time now – If someting works – what is the justification for “CHANGING” it?????
This IS an important issue. When kindergaten children get to learn that we are ‘one nation under god’ and ‘in god we trust’ is how adults look upon the cosmos, what are they to believe that we believe.
The latest presidential primaries, especially the Republican, should show all of us the mind hold that the religious right has on this country.
There is a campaign here in southern CA to get “In God We Trust” (our national motto) put up in all city council chambers.
For how well god handles things, just look at the “holy land”. That should put the fear of god into anyone who puts his trust in god to handle anything!!!
Why not remove “in god we trust”?
Seems our government is removing it for us. First we okay abortion, then we allow certain states to allow an individual to legally commit suicide and now we are in favor of embryonic stem cell research and cloning. Why worry about some words on a dollar or coin – it’s meaningless.
God left our country some time ago , we threw him out.
It’s never too late to be saved by Jesus Christ. Just call on him, believe he went to the Cross to die for you, and you can be saved. To the athiests who think there is no one bigger or better or smarter than they are…remember, you still have a chance for redemption. One day we will all kneel down at the judgment seat, and you will know better by then.
KEEP IT……..Think what you will.
I believe that “in God we trust” is an important issue right now. God created each one of us. Whether you believe that or not does not change the truth. Truth is absolute. It cannot be changed by whether or not you believe it or not. God did not just create us and drop us off on a planet. He loves and cares for each one of us. His love is far reaching and unchanging. His love is not determined how we feel about Him or if we reject Him. Our nation was based on God and fundamental truths. It is sad to me to hear how people do not feel this issue is relevant. You do not find it relevant because you do not know of Gods love. You reject the idea of God because you do not choose to allow Him to be a part of your life. Take a moment and ask God to reveal Himself to you and wait. Don’t expect the sky to burst into flames , but if you seek Him – He Will answer. I believe that “in God we trust” should not be taken off our currency because I believe in a God that is unsurpassing in his mercy, gracious to forgive, and desires a relationship with every person he has created.
“In God We trust” should remain on our money. It is not hurting or offending anyone. For those of us who still believe God should be in the center of our lives, “In God We trust” is a good thing. Everyone who believes that God should be removed, from everything, that we hold dear, is given the priority. It is time to listen to the rest of us.
Great news for you! Jesus hated religion, too! He solved that problem when he (only One was required) died on the cross. Jesus came to save the religious and those who are not. He believes in RELATIONSHIP, not religion. It’s the ceremony, the measurements, the judgments that we place on each other that is wrong. Religion is man-made and you’re right it is evil. The end of religion will not come by genocide. The end of religion comes when people make the God-given choice to know Him. The best way to combat religion is to have a personal relationship with the Savior – the One who died to save us from religion and from so much more.
We should get rid of “In g-d We Trust” on our monies. If the government could add it in 1954, then that means we can take it off NOW too. Having “In g-d we trust” doesn’t tell people you’re a religious people, it just tell people you’re ignorant of other religions. Besides, putting that on the money doesn’t make it more useful, but rather makes it more heavier than it should be, even putting it on the edges will not work, like the gold dollar coins. Not EVERYONE believes in g-d, and this nation wasn’t BUILT on the notion that this should be a CHRISTIAN nation!!! GET OVER IT. TELL ME WHERE IT IS: It’s not in the Constitution or the Declaration of Independence which says “This nation is based on Christianity”. There’s more people who believe in other religions or are Atheists in the U.S. Ignorant Christians will call all non-Abrahamic religious people “Atheists” which is SOOOO…. WRONG!!! FYI, there’s Buddhists, Sikhs, Taoists, etc….
I have never seen an atheist facing death some how they all seem to call on God then, I am so glad He answer prayer on death beds.
Leave it alone. I am tired of people telling me what we need to do. We are all Americans. We need In god we trust.
shut the fuck up or face anon
